ULUWATU BALI

Planning an Uluwatu Bali holiday? Discover the best areas to stay around Uluwatu, including beaches, clifftop resorts, temples and things to do with advice from BlueSun Travel.

SPECTACULAR CLIFFS, BEAUTIFUL BEACHES & LUXURY COASTAL ESCAPES

Uluwatu is one of Bali's most spectacular coastal destinations.

Located on the southern Bukit Peninsula, the wider Uluwatu area is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise water, surf beaches, luxury resorts, stylish restaurants and magnificent Indian Ocean sunsets.

It feels very different from Seminyak, Sanur or Nusa Dua.

Instead of long, easily accessible beachfronts and established resort streets, Uluwatu offers a collection of coastal neighbourhoods, hidden beaches, clifftop hotels and spectacular ocean views.

Some of Bali's most beautiful resorts are found here.

But Uluwatu requires a little more planning than many visitors expect.

Hotels and restaurants can be spread apart. Beaches may involve steep stairways. And a resort overlooking the ocean doesn't necessarily mean you can walk straight onto the sand.

Choose the right location and Uluwatu can be extraordinary. Choose the wrong one and getting around may become a bigger part of your holiday than you'd planned.

WHY STAY IN ULUWATU?

Uluwatu offers some of Bali's most dramatic coastal scenery.

The combination of limestone cliffs, white-sand beaches, turquoise water, luxury resorts and west-facing ocean views gives this part of Bali a very different appeal from the island's established resort destinations.

It's particularly attractive for couples, honeymooners, surfers and travellers who want a beautiful hotel in a spectacular setting.

You can spend your days exploring beaches, enjoying a clifftop pool, visiting Uluwatu Temple, discovering restaurants or simply watching the ocean.

However, Uluwatu isn't necessarily the best choice if you want to walk everywhere.

Uluwatu May Suit You If You Want:

  • Dramatic coastal scenery and ocean views
  • Luxury clifftop resorts and private villas
  • Beautiful beaches and surfing
  • Spectacular sunsets
  • Stylish restaurants and beach clubs
  • Romantic accommodation for couples
  • A quieter alternative to some of Bali's busiest resort streets
  • A holiday where the scenery is part of the experience

Our view: Uluwatu can be one of Bali's most memorable destinations, but we would pay particular attention to the exact hotel location, beach access and how you intend to get around.

WHERE TO STAY IN ULUWATU?

Coastal cliffs and youthful buzz

Choosing the Right Part of the Bukit Peninsula

Uluwatu is often used as a general name for a much wider section of Bali's southern Bukit Peninsula.

Accommodation described as being in Uluwatu may be located around Pecatu, Bingin, Padang Padang, Suluban or Balangan.

These areas offer very different experiences.

Some are popular for surfing and beach access. Others are known for private villas, luxury clifftop resorts or spectacular ocean views.

Unlike Sanur or central Seminyak, you shouldn't assume that restaurants, shops and beaches will all be within an easy walk of your hotel.

In Uluwatu, the distance on a map rarely tells you the full story.

Area Best For What to Expect
Pecatu Luxury resorts and villas Clifftop accommodation, private villas, dramatic views and a spread-out landscape
Bingin Surf and boutique stays Surf culture, cafés and boutique accommodation; beach access and local conditions require checking
Padang Padang Beaches and dining Popular beach, cafés, restaurants and accommodation near the main coastal road
Suluban Surf and ocean views Dramatic cliffs, surf access, sunset venues and steep pathways
Balangan Beach escapes and surfing Scenic beach, surf breaks, clifftop views and a less concentrated dining scene

❖ BlueSun Insight: An Ocean View Doesn't Mean Beach Access

Uluwatu has some of Bali's most spectacular hotels. But a resort perched high above the Indian Ocean doesn't necessarily mean you can walk down to the beach.

Some properties offer direct or managed beach access. Others overlook cliffs with no practical access to the sand below. And several of Uluwatu's best-known beaches involve steep stairways or uneven pathways.

That's why we'd choose your Uluwatu hotel according to how you intend to spend your days.

If you want an extraordinary clifftop resort, beautiful swimming pool, spa and ocean views, being above the beach may be exactly what you're looking for.

But if you picture yourself walking onto the sand every morning, swimming in the ocean and visiting restaurants without arranging transport, the hotel's exact location becomes critical.

For travellers with mobility concerns, we'd also look carefully at stairs, gradients, resort layout and access to facilities before recommending a property.

In Uluwatu, the best view isn't necessarily the best location. Choose the hotel that matches the holiday you actually want.

ULUWATU BEACHES

Bali's famed surfing beaches

Some of Bali's Most Beautiful Coastal Scenery

Uluwatu's beaches are among the most visually spectacular in Bali.

Limestone cliffs, turquoise water, white sand and powerful surf create a coastline that feels very different from Seminyak or Sanur.

However, not every beach is easily accessible, and some are better suited to surfing and sightseeing than swimming.

Padang Padang Beach

One of Uluwatu's best-known beaches, reached by steps through a narrow opening in the limestone.

The beach is popular and can become crowded. Swimming conditions depend on tides, swell and currents.

Suluban Beach

Also known as Blue Point, Suluban is famous for its dramatic rock formations, cave-like access and surfing.

Reaching the beach involves steep steps, making it less suitable for travellers with limited mobility.

Bingin Beach

Bingin is known for its surfing heritage, coastal scenery and relaxed beach atmosphere.

Access arrangements and the surrounding beachfront have been affected by redevelopment and enforcement activity, so visitors should check current conditions before planning a visit.

Balangan Beach

Balangan offers an attractive stretch of sand, surfing and spectacular views from the surrounding cliffs.

It's particularly appealing for photography, sunsets and enjoying the coastline.

Dreamland Beach

Dreamland is another well-known beach on the Bukit Peninsula, offering white sand, ocean views and surf.

Swimming conditions can be challenging, particularly when the swell is strong.

Melasti Beach

Located further east along the southern Bukit coastline, Melasti is known for its dramatic limestone access road, beach clubs and attractive coastal setting.

It can be worth visiting even if you're staying elsewhere in Uluwatu.

THINGS TO DO IN ULUWATU

Uluwatu shopping, beaches and attractions

You certainly don't have to spend every day beside the swimming pool.

Although you can.

We won't judge.

Visit Water Blow

Water Blow on Peninsula Island is one of Nusa Dua's best-known natural attractions, where ocean swells strike the limestone coastline and send water upwards through the rocks.

Keep to designated viewing areas and follow local safety instructions.

Walk or Cycle Around Nusa Dua

The landscaped resort precinct and coastal paths make walking and cycling an easy way to explore the area.

Visit Museum Pasifika

Museum Pasifika provides an interesting cultural alternative to another afternoon beside the pool and is located within the Nusa Dua tourism area. ITDC lists it among the precinct's cultural attractions.

Play Golf

Golfers have access to Bali National Golf Club within the wider Nusa Dua area.

Go Shopping

Bali Collection provides shopping, dining and entertainment within the resort precinct.

Try Watersports

Nearby Tanjung Benoa is one of southern Bali's best-known areas for watersports.

Explore Beyond Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua can also work as a comfortable base for private touring elsewhere in southern Bali.

EATING & DRINKING IN ULUWATU

Cliff top dining

Clifftop Dining, Beach Cafés & Resort Restaurants

Uluwatu's dining scene has developed considerably.

You'll find casual cafés, local Indonesian restaurants, international dining, stylish sunset venues and sophisticated restaurants within luxury resorts.

The scenery is often part of the experience.

However, restaurants are spread across the peninsula.

Don't assume you'll be able to walk from your hotel to a different restaurant every evening.

If dining out is a major part of your holiday, we'd recommend choosing accommodation near the restaurants and neighbourhoods you expect to use.

Otherwise, plan on using private transport.

SHOPPING IN ULUWATU

Sports, surfing and small boutiques

Uluwatu isn't one of Bali's major shopping destinations.

You'll find surf shops, small boutiques, resort wear, jewellery and lifestyle stores, particularly around the busier coastal neighbourhoods.

For extensive shopping, Seminyak offers considerably more choice.

We'd choose Uluwatu for its coastline and accommodation rather than its shopping.

ULUWATU HOTELS & RESORTS

Where Should You Stay in Uluwatu?

Uluwatu offers some of Bali's most impressive accommodation.

Luxury clifftop resorts, private pool villas, boutique hotels and surf-focused properties provide very different ways to experience the destination.

Unlike Sanur, where the surrounding neighbourhood can be a major attraction, Uluwatu accommodation often becomes an important part of the holiday itself.

What Type of Uluwatu Accommodation Suits You?

Luxury Clifftop Resorts

Ideal for couples and luxury travellers wanting spectacular ocean views, beautiful pools, restaurants, spas and exceptional surroundings.

Private Pool Villas

Particularly appealing for honeymooners, couples and travellers wanting privacy and space.

Boutique Hotels

Suitable for travellers who prefer smaller properties and want to spend more time exploring the surrounding area.

Surf Accommodation

Best for visitors whose main priority is accessing Uluwatu's famous surf breaks.

Luxury Beach Resorts

For travellers wanting easier beach access, selected coastal resorts may be preferable to properties perched high above the cliffs.

Choosing the Right Uluwatu Hotel

Before booking, we'd recommend checking:

  • The exact hotel location
  • Whether the property has practical beach access
  • The number of stairs and gradients
  • Distances between rooms, pools and restaurants
  • Nearby dining options
  • Transport arrangements
  • Whether the resort is suitable for children or travellers with mobility concerns

A spectacular ocean view is wonderful. But it doesn't automatically make a hotel suitable for your holiday.

IS ULUWATU RIGHT FOR YOU?

Uluwatu is particularly rewarding for travellers who value dramatic scenery, luxury accommodation, surfing and beautiful coastal settings. However, its spread-out layout and challenging beach access won't suit everyone.

Uluwatu offers some of Bali's most spectacular coastal scenery, luxury resorts and beautiful beaches. However, its spread-out layout, steep cliffs and reliance on transport mean it won't suit every traveller.

Choose Uluwatu If... Consider Somewhere Else If...
You love dramatic ocean views and coastal scenery You prefer flat beachfronts and easy beach access
Luxury clifftop resorts and private villas appeal to you You want restaurants and shops immediately outside your hotel
You enjoy surfing, beaches and sunsets Calm swimming beaches are your main priority
You enjoy spending time at a beautiful resort You prefer a compact destination that's easy to explore on foot
You're comfortable arranging transport to explore You want to avoid transport and long transfers between attractions
You enjoy discovering secluded beaches and coastal viewpoints Steep stairs, uneven paths or hills would make your holiday difficult
You want a romantic or scenic Bali escape You prefer an established town with extensive shopping and dining within walking distance

Our view: Uluwatu can be one of Bali's most rewarding destinations, particularly for couples and travellers who appreciate spectacular scenery and beautiful accommodation. However, we'd be especially careful when recommending it to anyone who requires easy walking conditions or direct beach access.

COMPARING ULUWATU WITH OTHER BALI DESTINATIONS

ULUWATU or NUSA DUA?

These destinations both offer outstanding luxury accommodation, but the holiday experience is very different.

Choose Uluwatu for dramatic cliffs, ocean views, surf beaches, boutique villas and a more adventurous coastal setting.

Choose Nusa Dua for large beachfront resorts, landscaped grounds, extensive facilities and generally easier access to resort beaches.

For travellers who want luxury without worrying about steep beach access or travelling between restaurants, we'd often favour Nusa Dua.

👉 Explore Nusa Dua →

ULUWATU or SEMINYAK?

Choose Uluwatu for spectacular coastal scenery, luxury villas, surfing and clifftop sunsets.

Choose Seminyak for restaurants, shopping, beach clubs and a more established holiday environment where many attractions can be reached on foot from well-located hotels.

If you intend to spend most of your holiday enjoying your resort and the coastline, Uluwatu deserves serious consideration.

If you want to walk out every evening and choose from numerous restaurants, Seminyak may suit you better.

👉 Explore Seminyak →

ULUWATU or SANUR?

These destinations offer almost opposite beach experiences.

Choose Uluwatu for cliffs, surfing, dramatic scenery and spectacular sunsets.

Choose Sanur for a relaxed beachfront promenade, generally calmer coastal conditions, restaurants and an easier daily routine.

For travellers with mobility concerns, Sanur will often be the more practical choice, although individual hotel facilities still need checking.

👉 Explore Sanur →

ULUWATU or CANGGU?

Both destinations appeal to travellers who enjoy surfing, restaurants, beach clubs and sunsets.

Choose Uluwatu for spectacular clifftop scenery, luxury villas and a collection of beautiful beaches.

Choose Canggu for a stronger concentration of cafés, boutiques, restaurants and contemporary coastal lifestyle venues.

Neither destination is ideal if you want to avoid traffic or rely entirely on walking.

👉 Explore Canggu →

ULUWATU or UBUD?

These destinations make an excellent combination.

Choose Uluwatu for coastal scenery, beaches, sunsets and luxury resorts.

Choose Ubud for culture, rice terraces, temples, wellness and tropical countryside.

For a longer Bali holiday, combining Ubud and Uluwatu provides two distinctly different experiences.

GETTING TO ULUWATU

Distance from the airport, your hotel, shops and attractions.

Uluwatu is located on Bali's southern Bukit Peninsula, southwest of Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Transfer times vary considerably depending on your hotel's location and traffic conditions.

Accommodation around Pecatu, Bingin, Balangan and other coastal areas may involve different routes and travel times.

Private transfers are generally the easiest option for travellers arriving with luggage.

BlueSun Travel can arrange your flights, accommodation, airport transfers, tours and travel insurance as part of the same Bali holiday.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU STAY IN ULUWATU?

What is the perfect duration for staying in Uluwatu?

For most visitors, we'd recommend approximately three to five nights.

That gives you enough time to enjoy your accommodation, explore several beaches, visit Uluwatu Temple and experience the coastal scenery without constantly rushing.

For travellers booking a luxury resort or private villa, longer stays can work extremely well.

Recommended Bali Holiday Combinations

Uluwatu + Ubud

Dramatic coastal scenery followed by culture, rice fields and tropical countryside.

Uluwatu + Sanur

Clifftop luxury and surfing followed by a more relaxed, walkable coastal destination.

Uluwatu + Seminyak

Spectacular ocean views followed by shopping, restaurants and a livelier resort atmosphere.

Uluwatu + Nusa Dua

Two different luxury coastal experiences, although we'd generally recommend this combination only for longer holidays.

Our preference would usually be to combine Uluwatu with a destination offering a noticeably different experience rather than changing hotels simply for the sake of it.
