PORT ARTHUR TOURS TASMANIA

Visit the historic penal colony of Port Arthur, Tasmania

HISTORIC TOURS OF PORT ARTHUR - TASMANIA

Our Port Arthur Tours Tasmania offer travellers the chance to step back in time and trace the roots of Australia's modern colonisation, through the plight of exiled convicts.

Port Arthur was completed as a British penal colony in 1853. It was intended for hardened criminals, as well as rebellious and political outcasts. It had one of the strictest security regimes of any British penal system, where corporal and physical punishment was dished out regularly to prisoners that contravened the system. Yet much of this paled in significance to the psychological punishments: the depravation of light, food, water, sound.
