Candi Dasa (pronounced "Chandi" Dasa) is a small seaside town on the eastern coast of Bali. It rests on the edge of a fresh water lagoon, that blooms with colourful lillies in the morning. The centre of the town is built around Jalan Raya Candida, where a scattering of restaurants, bars, shops and hotels line the main road. Tourists are drawn to its relaxed lifestyle and calm surroundings, craving more of a rustic escape, than the wild throng of toursist bars and hot spots.
Location
Candi Dasa is also just a 1-hour drive north of Sanur, so despite its remoteness, you are never far from the bigger shops and holiday-town, beach-life buzz. Many tourists add a 3-day stay in Candi Dasa, as part of their main holiday plans for Sanur, esspecially as it is like a gateway, stepping stone to other massively popular islands. 20 mins away is Padang Bai, where you can board a boat to Nusa Penida, Lembongan Island, or just over two-hours away is Lombok and the Gili Islands.
History
It is believed that Candi Dasa was founded as a fishing village around the 12th century and even today, if you drive the main coastal roads in the morning, you can see many roadside stalls selling freshly caught mackerel. Fishing remains core to the community.
Before the modern name of Candi Dasa was adopted, it was known as both Teluk Kehen ("Bay of Fire") and Cilidasa. It possibly dervived its name from the temple near the lagoon, which bears a statue of the fertility goddess Hariti surrounded by a group of children. In Balinese this is translated as "ten children". Many Balinese who want to have children will make a pilgrimage visit to this temple. The modern name is thought to be a corruption of this older name Cilidasa.
By the 1970s, tourism was booming in Bali and Candi Dasa started to draw new crowds of tourists, especially for the diving and snorkelling. The village started to develop and prosper with new restaurants, modern bars and hotels popping up along the main road.
