The best time to visit Bali depends on what you want to do. A family planning a beach holiday may have different priorities from a couple looking for a romantic retreat or travellers wanting to explore Bali's cultural attractions.
Best Time for Beach Holidays
For beach holidays, May to September is generally an excellent period, with lower rainfall and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the coastline.
Popular destinations include Seminyak, Sanur, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua.
Remember that swimming and surfing conditions vary between beaches and seasons. A sunny day does not always mean calm seas.
Best Time for Family Holidays
Families often travel during Australian school holidays, particularly in April, July, September and December–January.
July and September can offer attractive weather conditions, while the Christmas holidays are generally wetter.
If you're travelling during school holidays, we recommend booking popular family resorts well in advance, particularly in Nusa Dua, Sanur and Legian.
Best Time for Couples and Honeymoons
May, June and September are excellent months to consider for a romantic Bali holiday, combining generally favourable weather with opportunities to avoid the busiest travel periods.
For couples, we particularly recommend Jimbaran for sunset dining, Ubud for private villas and wellness retreats, and Uluwatu for dramatic ocean views.
Best Time for Sightseeing and Cultural Experiences
Bali's temples, traditional villages, rice terraces and cultural attractions can be enjoyed throughout the year.
The generally drier months from May to September are particularly convenient for outdoor sightseeing, although the wet season brings lush landscapes and beautiful green scenery.
For a cultural holiday, consider combining Ubud with East Bali destinations such as Candidasa.
Best Time for Surfing and Water Activities
Surfing conditions depend on the coastline and seasonal winds. Bali's west-coast surf breaks are generally more popular during the dry season, while some east-coast breaks are favoured during the wetter months.
Snorkelling, diving and boat excursions depend on local sea conditions, visibility and operator advice. Check conditions before arranging water-based activities.
