BALI HOLIDAY PLANNING AT A GLANCE

A quick guide to how you plan a Bali holiday

Planning Consideration Our Advice
Where to Stay Choose your Bali destination before selecting a hotel.
Best Time to Visit April to October generally offers drier conditions, although Bali is a year-round destination.
How Long to Stay Seven to ten nights suits many holidays; longer stays allow you to explore more than one region.
Popular Destinations Seminyak, Sanur, Legian, Nusa Dua, Ubud and Jimbaran offer different holiday experiences.
Getting Around Allow extra time for road transfers, particularly in southern Bali.
Travel Documents Check passport validity and current Indonesian entry requirements before departure.
Travel Insurance Arrange suitable cover for medical expenses, activities and unexpected disruptions.
Holiday Planning Consider your preferred daily routine, travel dates, mobility and accommodation budget.

CHOOSING WHERE TO STAY IN BALI

Bali is not one single holiday experience. The resort atmosphere of Nusa Dua is quite different from the restaurants and shopping of Seminyak, the relaxed beachfront character of Sanur or the cultural surroundings of Ubud.

Your choice of location will influence how much time you spend travelling, the restaurants and activities available nearby, and whether your holiday feels lively, peaceful or somewhere in between.

For first-time visitors, we recommend comparing destinations before selecting a resort.

Our Where to Stay in Bali guide helps you understand the differences between Bali's main holiday areas and choose a location that matches your interests.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BALI?

Bali is a year-round holiday destination, although weather patterns, visitor numbers and accommodation prices vary throughout the year.

The generally drier months from April to October are popular for beach holidays, outdoor activities and sightseeing. The wetter season, typically November to March, brings higher humidity and more frequent tropical rainfall.

However, the wet season does not necessarily mean continuous rain. Many visitors enjoy excellent holidays during these months, particularly when accommodation offers better value.

School holidays, Christmas, New Year and other peak travel periods can influence both availability and pricing.

Read our Best Time to Visit Bali guide to compare seasons, visitor numbers and the most suitable months for different holiday experiences.

UNDERSTANDING BALI WEATHER

Bali has a tropical climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year. Seasonal rainfall and humidity are generally more important considerations than temperature.

Weather can also vary between Bali's coastal resorts and inland or mountainous areas.

For example, the higher elevations around Ubud and central Bali can experience cooler conditions and more rainfall than some southern coastal locations.

Our Bali Weather Guide explains monthly temperatures, rainfall patterns, humidity and regional climate differences.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL TO BALI

Travel checklist

A successful holiday involves more than selecting flights and accommodation.

Before departure, check the practical requirements that may affect your travel plans.

Passports, Visas and Entry Requirements

Australian passport holders should check their eligibility for an Indonesian Visa on Arrival or electronic Visa on Arrival, passport validity requirements and any applicable arrival declarations or visitor levies.

Entry requirements can change, so always consult official Indonesian government information before travelling.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is an important part of planning a Bali holiday, particularly if you intend to hire a scooter, participate in water sports or undertake activities that may require additional cover.

Check medical expenses, evacuation, cancellation protection, policy exclusions and activity conditions carefully.

Read our Bali Travel Insurance Guide before selecting a policy.

Money and Payments

The Indonesian rupiah is Bali's local currency. Cards are widely accepted at many hotels, restaurants and larger businesses, but cash remains useful for smaller purchases and local services.

Consider international transaction fees, ATM charges and secure payment methods before departure.

GETTING AROUND BALI

Distances in Bali can be deceptive.

A journey that looks relatively short on a map may take considerably longer because of traffic, particularly around busy southern resort areas.

When planning your holiday, consider how often you want to travel outside your resort, whether you prefer organised transfers and how many destinations you intend to visit.

Private drivers and pre-arranged transfers are popular choices for travellers who prefer comfort and convenience.

If you're considering staying in two or more areas, allow enough time to enjoy each destination rather than spending too much of your holiday packing and travelling.

THINGS TO DO IN BALI

Shopping, dining, beaches and attractions

Bali offers considerably more than beaches and swimming pools.

Depending on your interests, your holiday could include cultural attractions, temples, rice terraces, wellness experiences, local food, scenic landscapes and day trips to nearby islands.

Popular experiences include visiting Ubud, exploring Bali's temples, enjoying traditional Balinese cuisine, discovering coastal scenery and taking guided excursions.

We recommend selecting activities that suit your chosen accommodation base rather than attempting to travel across the island every day.

BLUESUN INSIGHT

Key message from BlueSun Travel

❖ BlueSun Insight: Choose Your Holiday Before Your Hotel

One of the most common mistakes travellers make is choosing a hotel before deciding what sort of Bali holiday they actually want.

A beautiful resort can still be the wrong choice if it is too far from the restaurants, beaches, shopping or attractions you want to enjoy.

Think about how you prefer to spend an ordinary holiday day. Would you like to walk to breakfast, spend afternoons by the beach and explore local restaurants in the evening? Or would you prefer a peaceful resort where most of your holiday happens within the property?

Choose your preferred Bali location and holiday style first. Then select the accommodation that fits. That's how we approach Bali holiday planning at BlueSun Travel.

GETTING TO BALI

Most Australian travellers fly to Bali, with direct services from several major Australian cities and connecting flights through Southeast Asia. Airlines include Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Qantas, Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Indonesia AirAsia and TransNusa, among others.

However, flying isn't the only option. Bali is also a popular port of call for international cruise ships, with selected itineraries visiting the island as part of voyages through Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Whether you're planning a traditional Bali resort holiday or combining your stay with a cruise, understanding your travel options is an important part of planning your trip.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General Bali Holiday FAQs

Seven to ten nights is a comfortable starting point for many Bali holidays. If you want to explore several regions or combine a beach resort with Ubud, consider staying longer.

Sanur, Seminyak, Legian and Nusa Dua are popular starting points, depending on whether you prefer relaxation, restaurants, shopping or resort facilities. There is no single destination that suits everyone.

Yes. Bali offers a wide choice of comfortable resorts, private transfers and relaxed holiday experiences. However, accessibility varies considerably between properties, streets and attractions, so accommodation location, steps and walking distances deserve particular attention.

For shorter holidays, one well-chosen base is often more relaxing. Longer holidays can work well with two locations, such as a beach resort combined with Ubud.

t depends on your dates, preferred airline, accommodation and available offers. A package may provide good value, but the overall inclusions, flexibility and cancellation conditions are just as important as the advertised price.

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Medical treatment, evacuation, cancellations and unexpected disruptions can be expensive. Make sure your policy covers your circumstances and planned activities.
