History
Kuta was first discovered by the Europeans in 1597. It was principally a small fishing village that catered for the few locals. That was until the Dutch set up one of their trading posts in Kuta, as part of the Dutch East India Company.
During the 19th century, around 1835, there was a lively export trade of coffee, rice, spices and green tobacco. On the flip side, textiles and weapons were imported and traded with the local tribes that were often at war with each other. This soon got out of hand, as the princely states erutped into even more combative moods, culminating in the main trader Mads Johansen Lange having to flee in his schooner, to the safer waters of Lombok. Trading still continued under the ever increasing pressure of the Dutch presence. However, in 1908, the Netherlands Indies army attacked the royal city of Klungkung in the east of Bali, in response to a rebellious uprising. The local Balinese forces were massacred in a suicidal frontal attack against the Dutch forces.
For the next 34 years, the Dutch ruled almost without challenge until the Japanese conquered Indonesia.
By the 1960s, tourism began to play a role in Kuta. Travellers were drawn to the long sandy beaches and peaceful life of the Balinese people. Surfers began to flock to Bali, spurring a new growth in bars, restaurants, nightclubs and hotels.
