SANUR BALI

Planning a Sanur Bali holiday? Discover the best areas to stay, beaches, hotels, restaurants and things to do with advice from BlueSun Travel's Bali experts.

RELAXED BEACH HOLIDAYS, SUNRISE WALKS & AN EASIER SIDE OF BALI

Sanur is one of Bali's most established beach destinations and remains one of our favourite choices for travellers who want a relaxed coastal holiday without feeling isolated inside a resort.

Situated on Bali's east coast, Sanur offers a very different experience from Seminyak, Legian and Kuta.

The pace is generally slower. The beachfront is made for morning walks and cycling. Restaurants, cafés, shops and spas are easy to find, while many of Sanur's best-known resorts sit close to the beach.

And instead of heading down to the beach for sunset, Sanur is where Bali gets up early for sunrise.

Sanur particularly suits couples, families and mature travellers who want Bali around them — but don't necessarily need Bali at full volume.

WHY STAY IN SANUR?

Talk to our Bali travel experts at BlueSun Travel

Sanur works particularly well for travellers who want convenience without constant intensity.

You can walk along the beachfront in the morning, stop somewhere for breakfast, spend several hours beside the pool, head out for lunch, have a massage and choose a restaurant for dinner without needing to turn every day into an expedition.

The beachfront is one of Sanur's biggest advantages.

Sanur's coastline includes a long pedestrian pathway used for walking, jogging and cycling, while offshore reefs help create relatively calm and shallow water along parts of the coast.

Sanur May Suit You If You Want:

❖ A more relaxed Bali beach holiday
❖ Restaurants and cafés within easy reach
❖ A beachfront that's good for walking
❖ Generally calmer water than Bali's surf-oriented west coast
❖ Established resorts and smaller hotels
❖ Less emphasis on nightlife and beach clubs
❖ Easy access to spas, shops and local businesses
❖ A destination that works particularly well for longer stays

WHERE TO STAY IN SANUR?

Where location always matters

Sanur may feel more relaxed than Seminyak, but don't assume every Sanur hotel offers exactly the same experience.

The coastal area stretches through several neighbourhoods and beaches including Mertasari, Semawang, Batu Jimbar, Karang, Segara Ayu, Sindhu and Matahari Terbit.

Some locations place you close to restaurants and shops. Others offer quieter surroundings or convenient beach access.

Area Best For What to Expect
Sindhu / North Sanur Traditional Sanur atmosphere Beach access, local restaurants, markets and established hotels
Central Sanur First-time visitors Excellent access to restaurants, shops, cafés and the beach
Batu Jimbar Convenience and dining Central location with easy access to both beachfront and main streets
Semawang Relaxed resort holidays Beachfront resorts, restaurants and a slightly quieter atmosphere
Mertasari / South Sanur Space and quieter stays More relaxed southern end with beach access and resort accommodation

❖ BlueSun Insight: Sanur Is About Ease

Sanur isn't the Bali destination we'd choose because you want the biggest beach clubs, the latest restaurants or the busiest nightlife.

That's precisely why many people love it.

The real attraction is how easily Sanur can fit around your day.

Walk along the beachfront before breakfast. Spend a few hours beside the pool. Wander out for lunch. Have a massage. Stop somewhere for a drink and choose a restaurant for dinner.

You don't need to achieve very much. Sanur works particularly well when you want the freedom to do something without feeling that you always have to be doing something.

If your idea of a good Bali holiday involves doing things when you feel like it — rather than feeling that you're missing out if you don't — Sanur deserves serious consideration.

SANUR BEACH

A Different Bali Beach Experience

Sanur's coastline faces east and is protected in places by offshore reefs, helping create the calmer lagoons for which the destination is known.

That gives Sanur Beach a different character from Bali's west-coast beaches.

The beachfront isn't simply somewhere you visit for an hour.

It's part of daily life in Sanur.

People walk, cycle, jog, swim, have breakfast, stop for coffee or simply sit beside the water.

Sunrise in Sanur

If Seminyak is about sunset, Sanur is about sunrise.

You don't have to get up early every morning.

You're on holiday.

But we recommend doing it at least once.

Walk down to the beachfront before sunrise, watch Sanur come to life and then find somewhere for breakfast.

THE SANUR BEACHFRONT

One of Sanur's Best Features

The pedestrian route running along the coastline is one of the strongest reasons to choose Sanur.

It gives visitors the ability to explore different sections of the beachfront on foot or by bicycle without relying entirely on Bali's roads.

Official Indonesian tourism information specifically identifies Sanur's long pedestrian path as suitable for walking, jogging and cycling.

This makes Sanur particularly attractive if being able to walk somewhere easily is important to your holiday.

Take your time.

There is no prize for completing the entire beachfront before breakfast.

EATING & DRINKING IN SANUR

Plenty of Choice Without the Fuss

Sanur has an excellent selection of places to eat, from inexpensive local warungs and cafés through to international restaurants and resort dining.

The main commercial streets provide plenty of choice, while additional restaurants and cafés can be found around the beachfront.

This is one of Sanur's great strengths.

You can stay in a quality resort without being dependent on that resort for every meal.

For longer stays in particular, being able to walk out and choose somewhere different for breakfast, lunch or dinner can make an enormous difference.

SHOPPING IN SANUR

Shopping isn't the main reason we'd choose Sanur over another Bali destination, but there is still plenty to browse.

Expect a mixture of:

❖ Small boutiques
❖ Clothing and resort wear
❖ Souvenirs and handicrafts
❖ Art and homewares
❖ Local shops
❖ Markets
❖ Convenience stores and everyday services

For serious shopping expeditions, other parts of southern Bali offer more choice.

For holiday browsing between lunch and your next massage, Sanur does perfectly well.

THINGS TO DO IN SANUR

Sanur is more about enjoying where you are than racing through a sightseeing checklist.

Walk or Cycle the Beachfront

This should be near the top of your list.

Go early before the day becomes hotter and stop whenever somewhere looks interesting.

Watch the Sunrise

At least once.

Then reward yourself with breakfast.

Relax on the Beach

Sanur's reef-protected coastline creates relatively calm conditions along sections of the beach, although conditions and tides still vary. Always follow local advice before swimming.

Book a Spa Treatment

You'll find everything from straightforward massages to more elaborate spa experiences.

Explore Sanur's Restaurants

Leave a few meals unplanned and simply walk until somewhere appeals to you.

Visit Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida

Sanur is one of Bali's principal departure points for fast boats travelling to the offshore islands, including Nusa Penida.

That makes it particularly convenient if an island visit forms part of your Bali itinerary.

Sanur also works as a base for private touring elsewhere in Bali.

SANUR HOTELS & RESORTS

Where Should You Stay in Sanur?

Sanur offers a broad selection of accommodation, ranging from established beachfront resorts and luxury hotels to boutique properties and private villas.

Again, location matters.

If walking along the beachfront every morning is important, prioritise easy beach access.

If you expect to eat outside the hotel most nights, look carefully at what's within comfortable walking distance.

If peace and resort facilities matter more, you may prefer one of the quieter sections of Sanur.

What Type of Sanur Accommodation Suits You?

Beachfront Resorts

Ideal if easy access to Sanur's promenade and beach is central to your holiday.

Luxury Hotels & Resorts

Best for travellers wanting high-quality facilities, larger pools, restaurants, spas and resort-style service.

Boutique Hotels

A good option when you prefer something smaller and location matters more than extensive resort facilities.

Private Villas

Useful for families, couples and longer stays where additional space and privacy are priorities.

IS SANUR RIGHT FOR YOU?

Sanur is one of Bali's easiest destinations to enjoy, but it won't suit everyone. It works particularly well if you value walkability, relaxed days, quieter evenings and easy access to restaurants and the beachfront.

Choose Sanur If... Consider Somewhere Else If...
You prefer a relaxed, easy-going Bali holiday You want major nightlife, beach clubs and late nights
You enjoy walking or cycling along the beachfront You want Bali's strongest shopping and fashion scene
You like having restaurants, cafés, shops and spas nearby You want to spend your entire holiday inside a secluded resort
You prefer generally calmer coastal water Surfing and large waves are an important part of your holiday
You appreciate an established destination with plenty of choice You want Bali's trendiest restaurants, bars and newest venues
You enjoy quiet mornings, beachfront walks and sunrise Sunset bars and west-coast beach life are essential
You want somewhere that works well for a longer Bali stay You want somewhere energetic from morning until late at night

Our view: Sanur is particularly good for travellers who don't need their Bali holiday to constantly entertain them. If you value convenience, walkability and being able to settle into an easy daily routine, Sanur can be very hard to beat.

COMPARING SEMINYAK WITH OTHER BALI DESTINATIONS

Bali offers a truly stunning choice of holiday destinations and at BlueSun Travel, we actually visit most of these holiday hot-spots. It is well-known that our travel advisors spend on average 15 weeks a year in Bali reviewing hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafés and attractions

This section below offers a quick way to compare Seminyak with other top locations in Bali:

SANUR OR SEMINYAK?

This is one of the most useful comparisons when choosing where to stay in Bali.

Choose Sanur if you prefer a relaxed atmosphere, beachfront walking, generally calmer coastal conditions and quieter evenings.

Choose Seminyak if restaurants, boutiques, beach clubs, nightlife and west-coast sunsets are higher priorities.

Both have plenty of accommodation and restaurants.

The difference is largely pace and personality.

👉 Explore Seminyak →

SANUR OR NUSA DUA?

Both can deliver relaxing Bali beach holidays, but the experience is different.

Sanur feels more like an established Bali neighbourhood. Hotels, restaurants, shops and local businesses sit alongside one another and it's easy to leave the resort.

Nusa Dua is a purpose-developed resort precinct dominated by large luxury properties and landscaped resort environments.

Choose Sanur when you want the destination to be part of the holiday.

Choose Nusa Dua when you want the resort to be the holiday.

👉 Explore Nusa Dua →

SANUR OR LEGIAN?

Choose Sanur if you prefer quieter evenings, sunrise, beachfront walking and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Choose Legian if you want Bali's west coast, sunsets and easier access to the activity of Kuta and Seminyak.

Sanur generally feels slower.

For many travellers, that's the point.

👉 Explore Legian →

GETTING TO SANUR

Sanur is located on Bali's southeast coast, immediately east of Denpasar.

Official tourism information places Sanur Beach approximately 15 kilometres from Ngurah Rai International Airport, with journey times commonly around 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.

As with anywhere in southern Bali, we wouldn't promise an exact transfer time.

Bali traffic gets the final vote.

BlueSun Travel can package your accommodation with flights, airport transfers, tours and travel insurance, giving you one coordinated holiday itinerary.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU STAY IN SANUR?

For a straightforward Bali beach holiday, five to seven nights works well.

Sanur is also particularly suited to longer stays because restaurants, cafés, shops and everyday services are readily accessible.

For a more varied Bali holiday, consider combining Sanur with another destination.

Sanur + Ubud
Beach relaxation followed by culture, countryside, dining and wellness.

Sanur + Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida
A convenient combination if you're travelling onwards by boat.

Sanur + Seminyak
Two very different sides of southern Bali — although we would generally recommend doing this only on a longer holiday.

Don't add another hotel simply because you can.

Every hotel change takes time away from the holiday itself.
