What is Carnac Island?

Carnac Island is a 19-hectare nature reserve approximately 10 kilometres south-west of Fremantle. The island has been protected as a nature reserve since 1963 and is an important habitat for Australian sea lions and a variety of seabirds.

There is very little infrastructure on Carnac Island, which is precisely part of its appeal. This isn't a developed island attraction with cafés, shops and rows of sun loungers. Instead, the experience is about the water, wildlife and the feeling of getting away from the city without actually going very far.

The surrounding waters are popular for boating, swimming and snorkelling, making Carnac Island, WA an easy marine adventure from Perth or Fremantle.

Carnac Island Sea Lions & Wildlife

One of the big attractions of Carnac Island is its wildlife.

Australian sea lions regularly use the island as a resting place, while the surrounding waters are also home to dolphins and other marine life. The island supports a variety of seabirds, including terns, shearwaters and cormorants.

Seeing wildlife is never guaranteed, of course, but simply cruising into the waters around Carnac Island can be an experience in itself.
