There is something rather special about seeing a whale in its natural environment.
One moment you're cruising across the calm waters of King George Sound; the next you may see a plume of spray, a huge tail disappearing beneath the surface or, if you're lucky, a whale breaching completely clear of the water.
Tours generally operate during the whale migration season, with humpback and southern right whales among the species regularly encountered around Albany. Dolphins and seals may also be seen during the cruise.
Whale sightings can never be guaranteed — these are wild animals, after all — but Albany's sheltered waters make it an excellent location for getting out on the water in search of them.
When Is the Best Time for Whale Watching in Albany?
The main Albany whale watching season is June to October, when migrating whales pass through the waters of the southern coast.
June to August is a particularly good time to look for migrating whales, while September and October can also produce excellent sightings as the season continues.
If seeing whales is high on your Albany itinerary, we recommend booking your whale watching tour in advance, particularly if you are travelling during the peak winter and spring months.
